In line with the EU Strategic Energy Technology – SET – Plan, where alternative renewable fuels and energy storage are considered key pathways towards the Energy Union, the project BALANCE (Increasing penetration of renewable power, alternative fuels and grid flexibility by cross-vector electrochemical processes), funded through the ECRIA instrument in Horizon2020, contributed to integrated development of reversible solid oxide cells - rSOC - that allow to radically improve the efficiency and flexibility of excess renewable electricity storage.
The BALANCE project originated within the JP FCH, and brought to conclusion a multidisciplinary effort where core technology was improved, systems were developed and validated, and an in-depth policy support assessment was carried out, defining a European Common Research and Innovation Agenda for rSOC deployment. BALANCE proved that rSOC technology can be key enablers in the energy transition, technological leadership and industrial competitiveness of Europe, creating flexible energy systems for a sustainable future.
